Survival Ration Bar

3 cups cereal (either oatmeal, barley flakes, wheat flakes or Product 19)
2 1/2 cups powdered milk
3 tbl. honey
6 tbl. water (or more if needed)
1/2 pkg. citrus flavor Jell-O (orange or other)

Mix together all dry ingredients (except Jell-O).  Bring to boil honey and 3 tbl. of water.  Dissolve Jell-O in honey water.

Mix this liquid mixture with dry ingredients.  Mix well, and add rest of water a teaspoon at a time until moist enough to mold.

Shape into 2 bars the size of a kitchen match box.  If you wish to dry for storage, heat in oven 200 degrees for 2 hours and turn.  Then heat on other side for 2 hours.  Wrap in foil and store on shelf.  These bars will keep for a long time.

Each bar contains 1000 calories.  Eat dry or cooked in 2/3 cup water or more.  Each bar could be 1 day food ration.

Ascorbic acid may be added to mixture if desired.  (2 milligrams per recipe of 2 bars).

When experimenting with the different cereals, we found that the best tasting bar was made with the wheat flakes, or other cereal flakes.  The oatmeal bar seemed somewhat dry.  However, all were acceptable.  One suggestion is to cut the bar in slices before storage, then tightly wrap the entire bar.
