The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom
First, I'm so excited that after 8 years I have
finally finished an actual book from cover to cover. I have read many
self-help book and pregnancy books, but not any stories. So, I'm excited!
This book is an autobiography of Corrie Ten Boom,
a Dutch woman who lived in Amsterdam during WW2. She was raised in a home
above a family owned clock shop. Her father was a famous watch-maker and was
a well-loved Christian man. The family was a very influential family in
Amsterdam, Holland. They knew many people throughout the country because of
their shop.
When the war was going on, Holland wasn't
affected until later. After a couple years into the war, Holland was overtaken
by the German Nazi's.
Things changed slow at first, then over the
course of 2 years things changed faster. The Jews were made to wear a yellow
star of David on their coats. Curfew was made at 10, then 9, 8, and finally 7
PM. Arrests were made constantly for no reason. Jews would disappear and
everyone knew they were taken to the concentration camps.
Corrie and her family wanted to help. After
pondering and prayer they realized that they knew influential people
throughout all of Holland and began to work for "the underground." They help
to hide Jews. Their watch shop became the center of most everything.
Then the day came where she and her family were
all arrested and taken to prison. Her treatment in the prisons was cruel and
inhumane. She had to deal with lice, fleas, dead bodies in the bathroom,
people dying daily, hard work, little food, standing naked in long lines in
front of Nazi soldiers.
