Conquering Mount Laundry

by: Katie Amos

The other day I was sick and tired of looking at the mountain of laundry that had grown on the second floor landing. (I would do the necessary laundry, but always let the other less important laundry stay there).  Since I am pregnant I made my husband carry that whole mountain of laundry downstairs.  He is so strong.   What I did next made me cringe, but I did it for my own good.

When you enter our home you walk right into our kitchen, which I had just cleaned.  I had my husband remove the mountain from the second floor landing to the clean kitchen floor.  I know, you can gasp now.  It is very unusual for me to want to make a mess in a room that I just cleaned.  Once the mountain was on the kitchen floor I knew that it must be done- and soon, because people are always popping into say hi.  I did not want that mail man to see the mountain of laundry in my kitchen next time he delivered a package; that is for sure!

Next, I made the mountain into several mole hills.  I had mole hills of red, blue, lights, darks, towels, and sheets. (As it turned out this was a good way to help my preschooler practice her colors). All of the laundry that I had been putting off was right there staring me in the face.  So now that I had broken it down into mole hills I counted.  I am ashamed to say that it boiled down to twelve loads!  Hey, those sheets are big and apparently I have a really big hamper for all of that to fit in and spill out of.   I then decided that I needed to do all of the clothing first, then move on to the sheets and towels.  All the things that take longer to dry I did last.

I did load after load that day and I kept at it until I had done ten loads.  As they came out of the dryer I folded each one.  I got a basket out for each of my family members and put all of their laundry into their basket.  I don’t know about you, but doing the laundry isn’t the hard part.  The hard part is it is getting it put away.  You know hung up and in the right drawers.  But I was on a mission.  Once I had all of the clothing done and separated into the baskets, my husband was home from work.  I had him carry them upstairs for me to put away.  I can’t wait until my little ones are old enough and big enough to put their own clothes away.

This method really worked for me.  In two days time I had all the laundry done and put away. (Well, almost all put away).  I felt so good that everything was clean again.  I had conquered my mountain of laundry!  There is no limit to what I can do now!  I bet now I can conquer the clutter of my kids’ rooms (that is another article entirely)!  Good luck with your mountain pile up!
