About 5 years ago, I went through one school year where I could NOT get rid of the lice. It was just short of cutting all three of my daughters hair short (1 daughter did cut her own hair).  I used all types of product, including the prescription stuff. Then it dawned on me;  if we are supposed to put all bedding/pillows and such in a dryer for 30 min. wouldn't using a portable dryer for your hair work also?

I went to our local thrift stores and found a portable hairdryer. I applied the Suave Coconut conditioner, put a disposable shower cap on, hooked them up to the hair dryer and sat them for 1 hour (my youngest daughter learned how to type on the computer by doing the typing tutorial) with the dryer on high. Worked like a charm!! I was lucky enough to find 2 portable hairdryers for $2.00 each at a thrift store and could have 2 daughters "cooking" under them at a time. I would repeat this process every evening for 1 week.

After they were done under the dryer, I would rinse their hair out, wash their hair with the Suave coconut shampoo AND a few tablespoons of baking soda. The baking soda causes the adult lice to literally slip right out of the hair, it was amazing....anyway, I would also add a few drops of tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil, massage into their scalps and go thru with the nit-comb.

Three years ago my daughter had head lice and medicines and such didn't work. Finally I found this site, and it was amazing. The miracle of all miracles, both my daughter and I were very pleased. Now I must battle it again; she got it from a next door neighbor. But now I know I don't have to pull my hair out and worry.  Thank goodness she will be lice free before school starts! http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/theliceprogram/index.html

We tried the harsh chemical shampoo in desperation. Didn't work. Tried olive oil, it helped. What worked the best was:

1) Douse hair in olive oil, blow dry for as long as you can stand. Comb with regular comb, then nit comb, clean comb with paper towels. Put thick hair conditioner gel (I used olive oil cream) and get hair white it's so thick on there.

2) Put on clear plastic cap, have person wear it all day, or sleep in it, for hours.

3) Use nit comb, clear off cream, looking for live lice (there were few). Don't wash yet!

4) Douse gel hair with shampoo. I used Dr. Bonner's or another peppermint oil shampoo (probably any shampoo with strong oil cutting will do), and again, comb through. You'll have what looks like whipped cream on the hair now. Nit comb to the left, clean with paper towel, to the right, clean with paper towel, lean their head over sink, comb forward, clean, then back. They don't mind because the hair combs so easily with the foam.....

5) Wash with shampoo, rough hair up with towel to dry vigorously.

6) Comb through wet, clean hair. Any sign, do it again. I've NEVER seen any more after that.

7) Repeat in ten days. Last year, I did this with 2 children, and the school nurse was amazed that there were NO nits. She checked for DAYS in disbelief.

I have 4 girls under 6 and have been battling lice with my 3 older girls since September.  I have tried everything and nothing has worked.  I was really close to shaving the hair off all my girls until my husband's grandparents told us about a treatment.   It's called the Nuvo treatment and I tell you I have done it and I have FINALLY found something that worked and my house is now lice free.

The Nuvo treatment is Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser, you soak there dry hair with it (until its dripping off) make sure to get it everywhere, let it sit for 2 minutes.  Then take a normal comb (the one where the teeth are fairly close together) and comb out as much cream as you can, (yes it is messy), until the comb is fairly clean of cream.

Then take a normal hair dryer on high heat and dry the cream in the hair (make sure ALL the hair is dry).  Leave it in over night (8 hours or more).  Wash out and style as usual.

Do this process once a week for 3 weeks after the first treatment.  The Cetaphil cream acts like plastic wrap and suffocates the lice.   I have done this and I have found that this is the only thing so far that has worked on my girls.

Good Luck To All Of You.

PMDD is a medical condition similar to PMS. It affects 1 in 20 women who have regular periods. The list of symptoms is the same, but PMDD is much more severe than PMS. It occurs about 1 week before your cycle begins, and typically ends a few days after it’s over... more
