A Soup-er Hero Family

by: Carol Reeve

We are a family of 9 and meal times are sometimes either like a cattle market or everyone's glued to the t v and if anyone dares to speak they're bombarded with annoyed shouts to be quiet. I felt we needed to learn some table manners and family home evening was the place to do it.

I laid a beautiful table and set the places before the children came home from school.  When they came in they were inquisitive as to who was "coming to dinner".  I told them that tonight there would be a special guest and they were to wash and dress nicely for the evening.  When they were in their glad-rags we started our family home evening.  At a certain point my husband went to get our special guest so we could continue our home evening when he had arrived.  Shortly after there came a knock at the door.  The children excitedly waited to see who the guest would be as I let him in.   Our children roared with laughter as they were introduced to our special guest....Soup-er man! My husband who is a well rounded man,  looked great in the costume I'd made him for the evening.  He did a great lesson on table manners as we sat to dine starting with the soup he'd brought with him.   We had to practice good manners throughout the meal, and we were able to teach our children a "boring!" subject in a fun way.

Even now about a year or so later we remind them that soup-er man will have to pay another visit if we forget our manners.   We still chuckle to remember how my husband looked with his underpants on top of his trousers too.
