Family Scripture Study

by: Nancy Goodsell

I have discovered two things about my family.  One, that they do better if we do our scripture study in the morning and two, they eat better if they don’t eat right after they wake up.  We do our scripture study first thing in the morning then eat breakfast.  Most day’s scripture study is mom reading to the kids.  We have done some things to mix it up and help the kids listen.  I don’t expect my kids to understand everything we read and I did not make them get up and read with us until they are in Kindergarten.  I feel that in the beginning, my reading to them will help them get us to the scripture language.  As they got older the more they understand and the more you can discuss what you read.

Here are some ideas to help the kids get into scripture study:

  1. Let them color as you read.  Have them color a picture about what you read.  If you are reading about when Nephi broke his bow have them draw a picture of the broken bow.  You can also print pictures from the church web site and other sites about what you are reading
  2. Do a craft project that goes with what you read.  When we read about the creation we made a picture depicting each day of the creation.  There are a few website online that has craft with Bible themes.
  3. Read from the Readers.  You can get these at the Distribution Center.
  4. Keep it simple.  Read a verse or two.  Start with the Scripture Mastery verses.

Remember the goal here is that you read and not the amount that you read.  Reading the scriptures is what matters most.

What?  No TV?

I recently had a friend email me about her desire to get her children off the electronic gadgets - meaning TV, video games, and the like.  She asked if I had any ideas.  We had actually been going through this ourselves, since I had allowed the VCR to baby-sit ...
