MILITARY Move Yucks?

Here are some natural remedies for getting sick during a move.

by: Christeena Phillips

If there is one thing that the military has taught me it is how to get sick. I know it sounds crazy, but let me explain. Year after year since the day I was born I have moved from one Air Force Base to another. At 18 I joined the military and became a nurse and was given the opportunity to see a million versions of me in and out of the clinic everyday, all adjusting to the climates and conditions of their new duty station. Now as a mother of 3, and a military wife, I am faced with taking my children in and out of the clinic every time we get a new duty station.  To be honest I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. So, I decided to see what other options are out there. Here's what I found:

 Problem: I am having allergy attacks from my new duty station, how can I acclimate without more meds?

Believe it or not, there is an answer to your prayers it's as simple as Honey. Yes, you heard me correctly, you can actually sweet tooth your way to a better breathing you. Locally farmed honey will offer you a helping serving of those histamines your body isn't used to. This helps your body adjust to the new pollens quicker. You simply add a couple tablespoons of honey to your diet every day for about 2 weeks and I promise you will see a difference. So, top your toast with honey, add a teaspoon to your hot tea, or drizzle it over some warm French toast. Just enjoy your LOCALLY farmed honey and feel better.

The Overseas Chest Crud:

So, your suffering from the I've moved overseas crud. You probably feel like death warmed over, and unfortunately it can last for a few weeks. What can you do that won't make sleeping or staying awake any harder? Enjoy a cup of tea and clean your sheets with Eucalyptus essential oil. Start your day with a cup of tea instead of coffee and end your day in clean sheets tainted with eucalyptus essential oil. This will help break up your chest congestion and resolve that sore throat. For severe cough attacks and severe sore throats try the "Cough Shot" and most importantly do not smoke, if you do smoke stop!  If you can't stop right now make sure to smoke American cigarette's. Cigarette's from other country's often contain charcoal filters and different by products, even those familiar brands you are used to at home. If you have to smoke, smoke American until you can kick the habit.

Chest Crud Tea;
1 packet pure peppermint tea
2 tablespoons pure honey
1 tsp. kosher salt
add to one cup boiling water, steep 2-3 minutes and enjoy.

Chest Crud Shot; (I have had this remedy many a time from my Mexican grandmother who swears by it, I promise it will stop that cough immediately)

1 heaping Tbs. or honey
1 pinch salt
1 tsp or squeeze of fresh lemon
1 pinch chili powder

Mix it up and swallow it down. It has a refreshing burn to it. I recommend sucking the lemon afterwards. What can I say?  It works!

Laundry wash: wash your clothes as normal and on rinse cycle add 1 tsp. of eucalyptus oil. A nice bottle good sized will run about 12 dollars and will last forever. ** This can also be used in your humidifier in place of Vicks or other unnatural chemicals.

Problem: The "Oh my gosh I have been cooped up in a c-130 jump seat for 14 hours ache";

The remedy for traveling space A, is simple:  Epsom Salts. They are dirt cheap you can find them at any wal-mart of overseas grocer. Every BX/PX and commissary carries them. Dump the entire package of that stuff in the bottom of your nice warm bath tub and soak for at least 15 minutes. Your skin with thank you as you become soft and silky. Your husband will thank you for getting rid of those rough feet and your back will thank you for remembering that no woman with child-bearing hips was meant to fit into a jump seat of a c-130.

And lastly, and less important, is our appearance as we enter our new duty station. Thanks to new water and weather we find great things like flat hair, greasy hair or even frizzy hair. How about that magic zit that you thought you ditched after puberty? Well, fight back without having to try a million expensive products.

Flat greasy hair: It's really quite simple. Add 1 tsp of baking soda to your normal shampoo. Get one of those little lemon shaped lemon juice bottles from the commissary and keep it in your shower and add a couple squeezes to your scalp and only condition the ends of your hair. Rinse thoroughly and enjoy body filled hair again.

Crazy curls gone wrong: So, you got the frizz. Well be grateful you aren't stationed somewhere humid, then you would have the grease. Simply drizzle a little olive oil on your palms rub them together and apply to the ends of your clean damp hair. Style as normal. I don't know why olive oil works and nothing else, but it will leave your hair extremely soft and your curls will be neat tendrils instead of Medusa's main.

I hope this helps you military Mommy's out there. If you have any questions I have a lot more remedies and a plethora of experience to help you out.
