Decorating For Summer Living

by: Charlotte Spears

The changing of the seasons from cool spring weather to the hot summer months can be an excellent time to consider changing the accessories in your home. Consider packing away heavy blanket throws and pillows that have dark winter colors. Bring out lighter weight cotton lap throws and toss brighter colored pillows onto sofas and chairs. For table tops, remove dark green plants and floral arrangements and keep things light and airy with single flower arrangements in clear glass containers.

Slipcovers on sofas and chairs are an easy and affordable way to get the look of new furnishings without breaking into the summer fun money. They do a wonderful job of protecting your furniture from the extra wear and tear that comes from young folks being out of their usual school routines for summer break.

If you have been considering getting rid of old or outdated upholstered chairs, now is the perfect time. For the summer months, replace the old piece with a lightweight wicker or wooden chair. These can often be found at thrift stores or home centers for just a little pocket change. You will now have the rest of the summer to decide what you really want to take the place of the ousted piece and gain a new piece to place outdoors in the fall.

Last, but by no means forgotten, spend some time on the outdoor living spaces around your home. If you have a porch, a veranda a patio or just a stoop in the front, lighten up any furniture with a fresh coat of paint to add to the curb appeal of your home. Place blooming plants on tables and in container gardens. There are now lamps available for outdoor use at most home centers and lighting companies to allow you to enjoy peaceful gatherings outdoors late into the summer evenings. Whatever you do, take time to make your home the most enjoyable place for your family to be this summer.
