Bag Holder For Litter

by: Betty Edwards

INSTRUCTIONS for making a BAG HOLDER for picking up litter ....

PICKING UP LITTER is good EXERCISE and it produces QUICK RESULTS..... This heavy duty bag holder...which is easy to make...will hold the trash bag open...It's great for Adopt-A-Highway volunteers and anyone that picks up litter...It makes picking up litter much easier...especially on a breezy day...There’s no fumbling with the bag opening... Advantages of using a bag holder versus a bucket: ...Bucket is heavy. It weighs about 3 pounds...Paper trash blows out... Bucket fills up quickly... ...Bag holder is very light weight...It only weighs 6 ounces...Large trash bag holds 3-4 buckets of litter and the litter does not blow out of the bag... Makes the job much faster... ____________________________________________________________

INSTRUCTIONS for making the bag holder...Observe the picture below before reading...

MATERIALS NEEDED:

36” X ¼” aluminum rod (don’t get a steel rod. It’s too heavy) 37” X ¼” vinyl tubing 4 Mini Size Heavy-Duty Metal Spring Clamps Cost of materials approximately $5.00 per holder. (Home Depot stocks all these items. That’s the only place we have found the clamps. Lowes also stocks tubing and aluminum rods.

TOOLS NEEDED:

COMPRESSOR , VISE and a strong arm for bending. ...

Remove tag from rod and clean the rod with WD-40. ...Push end of rod into the tubing. With tip of Compressor Nozzle snug in other end of tubing, blow air into tubing while someone else pushes the rod up into the tubing. The pressure of the air expands the tubing making it easy to slide the rod into the tubing...

CAUTION:. DO NOT turn the rod loose while blowing air into the tubing. The rod will shoot out like an arrow...(COMPRESSOR IS OPTIONAL. The rod can be inserted into the tubing by hand. This method takes a little time and effort) ...With head of nail mounted on wall, press rod up into the tubing so the tubing will overlap the sharp ends of the aluminum rod. ...Use a VISE to hold the rod for bending.

LOOK AT THE PICTURE. The measurements don’t have to be exact. The handle is necessary for control of the bag opening and it makes the holder easy to hang for storage.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE: (See pictures below)...Fold 2-3 inches of bag opening over the rod...Use the full opening of the bag or make the opening smaller by gathering the bag at the handle on the rod...Wrap the excess around handle... Grip the holder like a bucket handle...With thumb and twist of the wrist, you can open and close the bag. ____________________________________________________________ Putting the rod into the tubing is the hardest part of making this device. The tubing is necessary as it adds strength to the holder plus it gives you a comfortable grip and keeps the bag and clamps from slipping.

I am very interested in the litter problem that mars the beauty of county. A lot of people think that picking up litter is disgusting and degrading. To me, litter is what is disgusting and degrading and I would clean it all up if I could. Since I can't do that, I promote picking up litter while getting your walking exercise. My husband has invented a device to hold the trash bag open. We have been using it for 3 years and it has proven to be very strong and durable and so easy to use. It makes picking up litter much faster as you are not fumbling with the opening of the bag. I want to get this idea out to the public because this device is easy to make. I feel that the more people we can get cleaning up our world, the cleaner our world will be. People are less apt to throw out in an area that is clean.
