Smoothies and Ice Cream Drinks

Joyce Terry -:¦:-

Woodland Hills, Utah

To make fruit smoothies thicker, I usually use bananas (if the flavor works with the rest of what's in there), yogurt, or frozen fruit instead of fresh.

Banana Smoothie

1 ripe banana ( a ripe banana has tiny brown spots on the peel)
1/2 c. nonfat yogurt
1 tbsp. sugar or honey (or to taste)
1 c. crushed ice
1 tsp. fresh lime juice lime wedge or banana slice, for garnish

Combine the first 5 ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour the smoothie into a large glass and garnish with a lime wedge or banana slice.

Strawberry Smoothie

3/4 bag frozen unsweetened whole strawberries
4 cups pineapple juice
1 cup orange juice (fresh-squeezed or other high quality pulp orange juice)
1 1/2 cups low fat vanilla yogurt, frozen

Place all ingredients into blender. Blend well, stopping to stir when necessary, until creamy consistency is reached.

Pina Colada Smoothie

1 6-oz container nonfat coconut yogurt (frozen)
1/2 banana (frozen)
1/2 of a 20 oz can crushed pineapple
1 cup nonfat milk

Place all ingredients into blender. Blend well until creamy consistency is reached.

Tootie Fruitie Smoothie

I medium- large banana cut into chunks
1 cup of unsweetened orange juice (for an extra punch use one with passion fruit and/or another fruit in it)
1/2 cup of milk (your choice as to fat percentage)
1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
3 - 4 ice cubes
Place the banana, juice, milk, vanilla, and ice cubes in the blender. Cover and blend until frothy.
Pour smoothie into 2 glasses.

Purple Passion Smoothie

This smoothie is perfect for anytime of the day and makes a nutritious after dinner dessert.  You can use either fresh or frozen blueberries.

1/2 pint  ( generous 1 cup) of blueberries
3/4 cup of plain low fat yogurt
1/4 cup 1% low fat milk
3/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Put all ingredients into a blender an blend until smooth. If you would like to add some sweet to this smoothie add 1 tablespoon of honey.

Lemon Granita Smoothie

Lemon Granita can be served in wine glasses or for an extra special look hollow out a lemon and place the granita in the shell of the lemon.

1 1/2 cups of sugar
1 to 2 tablespoons grated lemon zest
2 1/2 cups of water
1 cup of fresh lemon juice

Combine sugar, lemon zest and 1/2 cup water in small saucepan. Bring to simmering, stirring until sugar is dissolved. remove from heat.   Combine sugar mixture, remaining water and lemon juice in 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Freeze 1 1/2 hours. Stir every 30 minutes to break up crystals until evenly crystallized (mixture can be frozen in ice-cream maker, according to manufacturer's instructions).
Spoon into glasses (or lemon shell). Serve with cookies.

Butterscotch Whirl

A tempting treat for butterscotch lovers.

1/2   cup butter pecan ice cream, softened
1/2   cup milk
1   cup ice
2   tablespoons butterscotch sundae sauce
1    butterfinger candy bars (regular size)
2   tablespoons whipped cream
2   tablespoons butterscotch chips

Add the first 4 ingredients into the container of an electric blender. Crumble 1/2 of the Butterfinger candy bar and add into the blender. Blend until the ice is crushed and the mixture is smooth. Pour into 2 chilled glasses; top each with 1 tablespoon whipped cream and 1 tablespoon butterscotch chips.

The Tropical Smoothie

  banana
  sunny delight orange juice
  apple juice
  milk
  Hawaiian Punch drink
  vanilla ice cream
chocolate syrup (the kind you make chocolate milk with)
  whipped cream
  water

Use as much as you desire. Use a blender to blend in ingredients. Kids of all ages including adults will love this recipe. An 8 year old kids made this up!

Creamsicle Freeze

EXACTLY like the Orange Julius in the mall, without the stomach curdling mixture of acidic orange juice and milk/ice cream.... I also included variations including different fruit, like PEACHES & CREAM, STRAWBERRIES & CREAM, etc.

2   cups orange juice
1   cup water
1/4   cup powdered coffee creamer
1/2   cup sugar
14-16    full sized ice cubes
1   teaspoon vanilla extract
1    peeled orange, for extra flavor (optional)

Add all ingredients into blender and blend on high until all no ice chunks are left. Makes about (2) tall glasses. I don't recommend replacing the powdered creamer with milk, as the acid in the orange juice will curdle the milk. Powdered milk may be used in emergency.

**STRAWBERRIES& CREAM VERSION: Replace orange juice with strawberries (or even any kind of berry).

***PEACHES& CREAM: Replace orange juice with canned or fresh peaches.

Be creative! There are so many ways to change this recipe to make the most delicious frozen drink that kids& adults will love!
