About The Homemaking Cottage

By Shiloah Baker

I am writing this to bring to light what this site means to me, why I began it, etc. Please take time to read it and I would love to hear your thoughts.

I started surfing the internet when I was pregnant with my second daughter. I really enjoyed finding all the neat ideas the internet offered. There weren't very many homemaking sites at that time. I found very few, and very few with free instructions to crafts, etc. I told my husband and my dad (who are both my best friends), that I wanted to do a site one day.

After the birth of my son, Benjamin, I decided to sit down and try it. I also started receiving the internet in my home at this time. I knew I wanted to have a family oriented site. I loved the idea of reaching millions of women all over the internet and touching their lives and sharing ideas. I never knew how far it would really go. The Homemaking Cottage was founded December 28, 1998.

I was the homemaking leader in my church at that time and I decided to make that my basis of my site. I started receiving emails right away and I was just so pumped up about it.

I began with the easy builder at Geocities and then taught myself html. I knew that one day I wanted my own domain, but I didn't ever think it would be possible. We aren't rich by any means and when we had extra money it couldn't go to that. While my baby was young I was only able to update monthly or twice a month, sometimes longer than that. But, the importance of sharing, is my goal and I continued on. Spring of 2000 I was blessed to be able to get my own domain and I would be ungrateful to not tell you what a blessing my mother-in-law is to help with that!

It is very important to me because I want to help other women in their roles as mothers, women, wives, homemakers, etc.. I know that this is a special calling given to me by my Heavenly Father, to support the sisters all over the world.

I am so grateful for the help I have received in keeping this site up. Kalualani Jackson donated money and Madge paid to have her banner up.  This was enough to help the site get back up and running.  Thank you to all of you for your help and support and a big thanks to Kalualani Jackson and Madge!

In April 2002, I was divinely inspired to create The Deluxe Edition.  It has continued to be a success and instrumental in keeping the site running.

The website has gone through over 4 different re-designs.  I'm always striving to make this site easy to navigate the larger it gets, and keep it up to date in decorating and maintaining it.

I currently have 5 people on my staff, myself, my customer service rep Genevie Doyle and 3 Writers for the Deluxe Edition.  I lead a team of 30 volunteer writers who submit articles all throughout the month!  They are all wonderful women and I enjoy working with them.

I hope you enjoy this website and the articles and ideas featured here.  If something has touched your life or family here on the website, we would love to hear about it!
